The wedge is back this spring with a mighty bang! Wedges have become bolder and chunkier, making them this season’s statement shoe. We’re spoilt for choice with styles ranging from sexy peep-toe to buckles wrapped and strapped across the foot inspired by Chloe Sevigny’s shoe for Opening Ceremony. You may have noticed these features have also transformed last season’s gladiators.
Forget thatched soles, this season’s wedges are formed in finely polished wood, leather, and even rubber. Wooden wedges have been carefully crafted into sharp graphic shapes, which are surprisingly easy to walk in, making them more wearable than in previous seasons. Check out Topshop’s options, where a pastel coloured high heel in engulfed in a wedge, creating the illusion of wearing high heels.
Rubber soles appear in the form of trainer-wedges which fall into this season’s sports luxe trend. They are probably the only shoes which make you a couple of inches taller but are also incredibly comfortable. Puma collaborated with fashion designer Hussein Chalayan earlier this year and created a trainer-wedge for the store’s ‘Urban Mobility’ range. The high-street has taken on this athletic alternative with vigour. Various versions can be found at Office, Topshop and ASOS in a multitude of colours from black to gold. Wear a pair with with grey marl cuffed harems, creating a relaxed but stylish sporty look.
Pair your wedges this summer with maxi dresses, harems, rolled-up chinos or even some sexy shorts when the weather adheres to show off those legs.
